How to use this plate calculator
- Enter the total weight you want on the bar.
- Choose your barbell. Most gyms use the men’s Olympic bar.
- Tick the plates you have. The calculator shows what to load on each side.

How much does a barbell weigh?
| Barbell | Weight |
|---|---|
| Men’s Olympic bar | 20 kg (45 lb) |
| Women’s Olympic bar | 15 kg (35 lb) |
Standard, EZ curl, trap, and specialty bars can weigh something different, so check the weight printed on your bar or ask your gym. For bench press, most gyms use the men’s Olympic bar, but always check yours.
Plates per side: the formula
Plates per side = (target weight – bar weight) / 2. For example, to load 100 kg on a 20 kg bar, you need 40 kg on each side: a 25 kg plate and a 15 kg plate.
Quick examples
- 60 kg: one 20 kg plate on each side.
- 100 kg: 25 kg + 15 kg on each side.
- 135 lb: one 45 lb plate on each side.
- 225 lb: two 45 lb plates on each side.
Loading tips
- Always load the same plates on both sides.
- Most lifters load the heaviest plates first, closest to the middle of the bar.
- Use collars to prevent the plates from sliding.
- Competition collars usually weigh 2.5 kg each, so add them if you use them.
